Japanese Steak and Radish Salad with Tahini Sauce! Mmmmmmm!!

The question every college student has on their mind is what am I going to eat for dinner. The next question then is what do i have in my fridge to eat. So i went to the fridge and took a look and what i had left in it. I had some red radishes in my fridge today and I thought wouldn’t a radish salad be great! I remembered this great recipe in one of the books in my super duper cookbook collection.

This recipe comes from Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Dinners. This book is awesome because most of the recipes are actually things people would make unlike others which are basically impossible.

Jamie Oliver's Jamie's Dinner

Anyways on to the recipe. I didn’t have limes so i used lemons. Limes would probably have been even better but it tasted really good anyways. I think the recipe in the book is for 2-3 people but i only made it for 1.

The ingredients i used were

  • 1 Sirloin Tip Steak - around 0.5lbs
  • 1/4-1/3 of a Daikon Radish peeled
  • 4-6 Red Radishes , stems and bottoms sliced off
  • 1 Red Chili Pepper sliced into really fine 1cm strips
  • Couple handfuls of Cilantro leaves
  • 1/3 of a Lemon’s juice
  • 1-2 tablespoons of Tahini mixed with couple tablespoons of water and 2-3 teaspoons of soy sauce

Here are the pics of everything first. I think the cooking steps will be long.. so you can see the pictures to see if you want to read it :) There are also pictures of my breakfast and a snack i had. The Blueberry Flax Granola is an awesome. I was browsing and found the all mighty Baba Ghanoush. It’s great with some french baguette as a snack.

So basically Tahini is sesame paste. People say that you can replace it with peanut butter but i dunno… Tahini has a pretty different taste but whatever peanut butter based sauces are good though (like with Vietnamese Rolls and Chinese Cold Noodles). I bought my jar from Whole Foods. So first make the salad part. Peel the Daikon Radish and slice really thin slices. The recipe said use a peeler to make the slices but i think just cutting thin slices into circles looks better. Make thin slices with the Red Radishes too. Take the Cilantro and rip them to just their leaves and then put all the radish and cilantro together in a bowl and set aside. Then make the sauce. Take the Tahini paste and mix it with some water. Tahini paste is already somewhat a smooth paste but you want to make it a little more liquid so it can actually be a salad dressing. Then mix in the soy sauce and lemon for flavor. Then take the Sirloin Tip Steak and season both sides with salt and pepper and rub a little extra virgin olive oil on both sides. Heat up the pan then put the steak in and cook both sides. I cooked it for about 10 minutes or so and got medium rare so cook it however long you think you’ll like. After you cook let it sit for a while so the juices suck back into the meat. Then slice it into thing small strips. I made them bite size. Pour the juices from slicing back into the Tahini sauce to give it even more flavor. Throw together all the stuff and mix and serve. Bon App!

Lunch Today! Konnyaku, Leeks, Red Chili Peppers and Some Love

So here is what i made for lunch today. Konnyaku, Leeks and Red Chili Peppers is all there is to this. It’s really simple and easy and especially quick! But don’t expect any 5-star dish or anything. It has nice leek flavors and because i really like leeks it’s good for me! I used 2 Red Chili Peppers because i love hot food. I sometimes joke that my mom brought me up eating lava because of the super high tolerance to hot foods i have.

Here are pics i took of my little adventure of cooking for lunch.

So basically it’s just chopped up leeks, sliced and flipped konnyaku, red chili peppers and S&P. Really simple and took less than 15 minutes to make. The leeks were really good. I bought them last week at the farmer’s market. I used most of the leeks of the bunch i bought making a my version of the taiwanese daikon pork soup that my mom makes.

If you are interested in that recipe just ask. I’ll make it probably sometimes soon since it’s almost winter. I like making nice soups when it’s winter. Also you can make a good amount for a couple meals. A quick idea of the soup is Short Pork Ribs, Daikon Radish, Leeks, Cilantro, Sesame Oil, Dashi broth or chicken broth whatever i had left, and TIME! I usually let it slow cook for a good amount of time (like hours/overnight) so the broth and everythings gets really good.

Anyways, that’s all for lunch today! (I hope someone eventually reads this or at least i look back at it someday. Otherwise i’ll feel strange writing to myself)
